One Afternoon 30 Years Ago...
Scanning a bulletin board, a classmate of mine uttered, “A campus English
newspaperreporter.Soundscool,huh?”Reservingmyownjudgment,Ijustfollowed
herwhenshetookthetest,asIhadnothingelsetodothatafternoon.Shefailedthe
test;Ididnot.-Infact,Itookfirstplace.-ThatwashowIbecameanArgusianwith
myupcomingtwoyearsinseparablefromthetitle.
Asacubreporter,Iwasmandatedtogoaboutmybeatsandreceivevarioussorts
of training. What I learned included but was not limited to how to plan ahead for
monthlyissuestobeontime;asktherightquestionstomysources;improveEnglish
writing and proofreading; think objectively and differently about the world; and
developinterpersonalskills,allofwhichlaterturnedouttobethekeystonotonly
professionalismbutalsowholesomeadulthood.
I now as a conference interpreter live on English language, which is part of my
self-claimed cosmopolitan identity, a great tool to explore the world and a source
of my sense of freedom and independence. Without absent-mindedly following
myfrienduptothedooroftheArgus30yearsago,Icannotimaginewhatkindof
personImighthavebecometoday.
