College of English
The Department of English Linguistics was established simultaneously with the opening of HUFS
in 1954. It was the precursor of the College of English. In March 2000, in response to the sharply
increasing importance of English, the department was reorganized and expanded as the Division of
English. In 2004, the College of English was established, the first such college anywhere in the world.
In 2006, it was reorganized into three departments and launched as an independent college. It has an
optimal educational environment including state-of-the-art multimedia language labs, an audio-visual
room, the Library of the College of English, and a multimedia library. Today, the College of English
cultivates global talents to lead society in the future.

College of Occidental Languages
The College of Occidental Languages, which was the foundation for the establishment of HUFS,
includes the Department of French, which has the largest number of foreign faculty members of any
university French department in Korea; the Department of Russian, which is a mecca of research
in Russian language and literature; the Department of Italian, leading the development of studies in
Italian literature, linguistics, history, and more;. the Department of German, which actively carries
out wide-ranging research and writing activities; the Department of Spanish, producing experts on
Latin America; the Department of Scandinavian Languages, which conducts in-depth research on the
literature and advanced social systems of five Northern European countries; and the Department of
Portuguese, which cultivates experts on Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, etc.

College of Oriental Languages
The College of Oriental Languages has the Department of Malay-Indonesian, the only such program
in Korea; the Department of Arabic; and the Department of Mongolian, among others. It is in name
and in fact the best educational institution in Oriental languages and area studies in Korea. It stresses
promoting talented individuals who have outstanding language abilities and extensive knowledge on
each area¡¯s culture and society including politics, economics, culture, and art. In order to cultivate
capable professionals who have comprehensive knowledge in the languages and cultures of Korea,
China, and Japan in particular, it created the interdisciplinary major of Northeast Asian Studies
undergirded by the college of Japanese and the college of Chinese. Through various interdisciplinary
courses transferring practical knowledge on the circumstances of the areas closely related to their
majors as well as language skills, it produces highly competitive professionals.
