Argusisgoingtocompareeasternhorrorfilmswithwesternones,analyzethedifferencesbetweenthemandalsoexplainthe
ideologicalandculturalbackgrounds.

GrudgeandRevenge:WhyaretheremanywomenghostsintheEast?
Many people consider ghosts scary and harmful, but originally Easterners didn’t think of them as villains. Historian
Lee Ee-hwa said, “In the eastern society, those who died with a grudge caused the birth of ghosts.” In the western world,
not only do people religiously ostracize devils, but they consider them as “an absolute evil” which humans must resist. In
contrast,easternghostsarenottreatedasabsolutelyevil,butrathertheyareconsideredtohavecertainstoriesbehindtheir
resentments.Easternhorrorstories,especially,havethestructureof“sin-grudge-revenge,”:forexample,thosewhocommit
revengearemainlywomen,asthefeudalsocialsystemoftheEastsuppressedwomen.Easternhorrormoviesmaximizefear
bypresentingpeoplewhodiedfromdiscriminationintofiguresonthevergeofhumanandspirit.Women’srevengestories
arestillpopularineasternhorrormovies,butthetargetsofrevengearechanged.Theybecamerandom,andcontrarytothe
