Nowadays,it’snoticeablehowsomeofourhumanvalues,suchascompassion,empathy,andsympathy,havegivenwayto
fear,coldlogic,mostoftenmanipulatedbyso-calledtrustedsources,andblackandwhiteviews.Thisbehaviorisevidentin
the“cancelculture”sopopularinourpresenttimes.Weeitherbehavethewaythemajoritywantsusto,orwearecanceled,
shunnedfromonlinecommunities,orsometimesevensocietyasawhole.
Additionally,famousbillionaireslikeElonMuskareconstantlyworkingondevelopingnewtechnologyintendedforhuman
use,notmerelywearabledevices,butnanotechnologythatcanbeinsertedintoourbodies.Forexample,Musk’sNeuralink
brain chip claims to help paraplegics walk again, help us save memories as photos, and allow our brains to communicate
wirelesslywithacomputer.Itallsoundslikesomethingoutofasci-fimovie,whichmightbeexcitingforsomepeople,but
extremelyworryingifwethinkaboutitdeeplyenoughandconsidertheconsequences.
Cybersecurity is extremely fragile nowadays; we witness cyberattacks and data leaks regularly. If even governmental
websites can be hacked, how can we trust a device inserted into our bodies to be secure enough? This might sound far-
fetchedbutvaccinepassportsareaclearexampleofthis.Blockchaintechnologyisbeingusedtosecurethedatainmostof
theappsusedforthispurpose,whichmakescheatingthesystemandhackingintoithighlydifficult.Nonetheless,ourdata
mightnotbeassecureaswethink.Thedatacanbeaccessedbyanygovernmentalbranchwithlittletonofurtherapproval
fromtheuser.Forexample,the“GreenPass”and“SuperGreenpass”usedinItalytoregulatecitizens’livesandrightsto
workbasedontheirvaccinerecordscanbeeasilyaccessedbytheAgenziaDelleEntrate,Italy’sIRS.Thegovernmenthas
allowedtheIRS,throughanemergencydecree,toaccessthevaccinerecordsandcrossthedatawiththetaxrecordsofall
citizensagedfiftyandabove,tofinethemifunvaccinated,andulteriorlybanthemfromworking.
Such freedom to use our data for purposes other than those we knowingly or unknowingly agreed to is what has the
potentialtotransformtoolsmarketedasconvenientandbeneficialtoallintotoolsofauthoritariancontrol.Whatmighttoday
beusedascontacttracingtechnologybecauseCOVIDcansetthefoundationoraprecedentforgovernmentstotryandhave
moreinformationandcontrolovertheircitizens'rights.ItiswellknownthattheEuropeanUnionisworkingonadigitalID
systemforitscitizensaspartofthe2030Agendawithregardtodigitaltransformation.TheEuropeanCommissionaimsto
provide citizens with a digital wallet where all their records can be stored, ranging from their medical records, diplomas,
bankinformation,andcontracts.Everythingwouldbeeasilyaccessibleandreadyforuse.Itsmaingoalistoensurethatthe
rightserviceisdeliveredtothepersonwhoisreallyentitledtoit(ElectronicIdentification,2022).Suchafunctioncouldbe
usefultoprotectouridentity,butitcouldalsoeraseimportantboundaries.Whatandwhodetermineswhetherweareentitled
toaserviceornot?
Ultimately,weshouldallbemoremindfulofwhatweagreeto,towhomweallowaccesstoourdata,andforwhatpurpose.
Technological advancement can be beneficial, but not when only the logical mind prevails. In a society upheld by many
different individuals, compassion and equity should be the pillars upholding our progress. Sometimes convenience can be
usedasadisguiseforsomethinginconspicuous,whichmightendupnothavingourbestinterestinmind.
