n 2007, the International Design Alliance, a strategic venture of global bodies representing the
designindustry,designatedthecityofSeoulasaWorldDesignCapital(WDC)for2010.Thetitle
ispartofabiennialglobalcompetitionopentocitiesaroundtheworld,andisconferredonthose
thathavedemonstratedexceptionalprogressusingthevariedtoolsdesignoffers.Acityisappointedas
aWDCeveryotheryeartocelebrateitsachievementsandtosharethemwithothercities.
In preparation for the event, major projects launched by the Seoul metropolitan government include
theSeoulDesignOlympiad,theU-DesignInternationalCompetitionandconstructionofDongdaemun
DesignPlaza.TheSouthKoreancapital¡¯sdesignationasaWDCoffersitthechancetoenrichitslocal
culturewhilerefurbishingitsreputationasacomfortableandattractiveglobalcity.
Of course, the designation, its accompanying slew of design events and its tourist attractions are
expected to boost the country¡¯s design industry, raising the brand of the city itself. But what is most
important,asfarasthecity¡¯sresidentsareconcerned,isthatagenuineupgradeofSeoul¡¯sbrandvalue
dependsmostlyuponthecitizensthemselvesratherthansuperficialimprovements.
Seoulisaliving,breathingcitywheresome10millionhumanbeingseat,play,feel,think,study,work
andsleep.Asthemainconstituentsofthecity,Seoul¡¯scitizensshouldbeitsmainfocus,withalldesigns
ultimately geared toward them. Only when a city¡¯s residents can truly describe their home as pleasant
will,itbecomeaglobalcity.Assuch,DesignSeoulisagreatopportunitytoenrichthelivesofthecity¡¯s
inhabitants.
Thecultureandidentityofacityisitsveryfoundation.Cultureopensasociety¡¯seyestodignityand
meaning.Itiscomprisedofasharedsenseofvalues,customs,heritage,art,food,clothingandshelter.
These elements help define a region¡¯s uniqueness and history. They enhance a city¡¯s growth potential
andareessentialtoSeoul¡¯sbecomingaglobalcity.
Seoul¡¯supgradeshouldbefocusedonitsmostimportantelement--the--city¡¯sresidents.Thecharm
ofcitieslikeParisorLondon,bothofwhichattracttouristsfromaroundtheworld,comesfromthefact
thattheyarenotjustbeautifulplacestovisit,butbeautifulcitiestolivein.Seoulmustworktopromote
this ideal for its own residents, to create a more pleasant and comfortable city that lives up to its own
growthpotential.
