cableTV.Otherguestsareshoutingandtheboyfriendlookspuzzledalot.Thisprogramisontheair7p.m.whenall
familymembersgatherandhavedinner.Since1995,withopening30channels,somecableTVbroadcastingstations
haveattemptednewmediaandmulti-channelformats.Thiswasanaftereffectotherthanthethreemajorbroadcastingsystems
people regularly are used to watching. Now, the number of cable TV programs became huge and televiewers choose a
programoftheirownfavoramong30to80channels.Increaseinnumerous,however,doesnotmeandiversity.Thecontents
are too insufficient compared to the number of channels. Furthermore as to quality, it gets worse, cable TV broadcasting is
calledanudityandaviolenceproducingcenter.
IthasbeentwelveyearssincetheopeningofcableTVbroadcastingwithmanypeople¡¯saffection.Despitetheimportanceof
newmediaanddiversifiedcontents,cableTVdidnottaketheroleofanidealbroadcastingwhenitwassupposedtoatthe
beginning.
In 2006, some programs such as ¡°Cheaters,¡± ¡°Jerry Springer Show¡± and so on were in trouble because it¡¯s over the line
contents.Eventuallytheprogramswerecutoffair.Howeverowingtoahighaudiencerating,thesekindsofshowsbrought
other similar programs in Korea. For example, a reenactment program, which shows a fake acting as if it is real, ¡°Dokgo
Young-jae¡¯sscandalonthespot¡±reportsaspotofadulteryasifitisreal.Theshowcreatessceneswithminimummosaicand
smallsubtitleof¡°reenactment.¡±Onanothershow,¡°ChoJeong-rin¡¯sspinningblinddate,¡±theplayersalmostfighteachother
andfoulanothercallingthemnames.Mostofthesesituationsaredirectedaftershooting,andmanyoftheunexpectednarration
havemadecontestantsoftheshowcomewithabadimage.
Audienceratingsbecomehigherdaybyday,whetherthesesituationsaredirectedornot.Afteraprogramends,plentyof
condemnations come up on inter net bulletin board system of the program. The nature of the mass, however, the more a
programbecomeviolentandnuditygetsoffline,themorepeoplewatch.¡°DokgoYoung-jae¡¯sscandalonthespot,¡±aKorean
version¡°Cheaters,¡±hasmaintaineditsaudienceratingatthreepercentofwholeratingssinceitfirstcameonairthisJanuary.
Also,¡°ChoJeong-rin¡¯sspinningblinddate¡±accedesasoneofthelonggoingprogramsasithaslastedtwoyearsthoughithas
been faced criticism and penalty was given several times. Once it gets a penalty, the experience gives knowledge to avoid
limitationsthenexttime.Themoresevereproblemisthatthereisalotofsimilarnewprogramsfollowing.
ThesebrutalitiesofcableTVbroadcastingswouldbringthoughtlessvaluesandwrongideologyfromforeigncountriesto
televiewers,especiallytoeasyexcitedtwentieswhogonutsonshowbiztrend.Incomparisontonationalbroadcastings,the
cableTVbroadcastingshavelotsofchannels,morepossibilitiestousecontentsandlessrestrictionsfromthePressArbitration
Commission.Byusingthesemerits,cableTVshouldgivepeoplesomethingspecializedandinstructive.Somemaysaythatit
isjustashowprogramforkillingtimeatthemost,whatcouldyoupossiblygetsomethingfromthat?Ifsomeonemakesa
program, however, the person should have responsibility for what he or she makes and its influence. Not only for the TV
program director also the most important thing in a job, is pride. People should know for sure what they make, and what
outcomesitwillbring.Insteadofprogramstoonlymakeprofitandhighaudiencerating,specializedprogramsthatgivesgood
impactarereallyneeded.
It is time to change today¡¯s cable TV which makes people frown. No televiewer wants to watch offending shows, rather
something useful for them. To come again as a true media people long for, the problems of nudity and violence should be
reconsideredandsolved.Otherwise,cableTVcannevershakeoffitsdishonorasayellowmediaandviewerswillaverttheir
eyesfromthescreen.
