ome,teachinghistoryisnotjustateachingbutitisstimulatingbecauseitallowsmetocontinueparticipatingin
thelearningprocess.Interactingwiththestudentsandoftengetchallengedbytheirqueriesisatwowayprocess
to learn and teach. This approach makes me feel that teaching is integral to my personal and professional
development.Ibelievethatwearealllifelonglearnersandassuch,Iseektodevelopmyteachingskillsthroughoutmy
career.
Studyinghistoryprovidesstudentswithachancetothinkabouttheworldaroundthem,tosubstitutecriticalthinking
for acceptance of ¡®natural¡¯ social relationships, and to appreciate how diverse the human experience has been.
Understandinghowhistory¡®works¡¯isanimportantstepinunderstandingtheworldweliveinandtheconsequencesof
thedecisionsweasasocietymake.
It is easier to comment on how not to teach history than it is on how to teach it. I only have to recall the hundreds
of negative reactions from adults when I told them I am a history teacher. ¡°Oh! That was my worst subject,¡± ¡°I hated
history,¡±¡°Historywasboring,¡±¡°Namesanddates,that¡¯sallitwas¡±and¡°Ican¡¯trememberanyofit,¡±andsoon.
Ithinkthatthefirstpriorityinhowtoteachhistoryeffectivelyistodeveloplearningstrategiesthatarouseandengage
the historical imaginations of our students. How we do that is by providing them with opportunities to do and to talk
abouthistory.Weneedtoencouragestudentstotakeontheroleofthehistorianinacreativeandcriticalway.Itisnot
by filling them with a narrative of names and dates for recall and test purposes but to learn it through involvement. I
couldnotagreemorewiththeresultsofamemorystudyconductedbyDanielleLappoftheUniversityofTexas,which
revealed,¡°werememberonly10%0fwhatweread,20%ofwhatwehear,30%ofwhatwesee,50%ofwhatweseeand
hear,and90percentofwhatwedoandsay.¡±
I am a huge supporter of using debates and discussion methods to make the students to feel the live history in the
classroomandatthesametime,ithelpstostartarealinteractionwithinthestudentsandbetweenstudentsandteacher.
