comfortable and steady seated position. Do not read this while you are

youareaccustomedtodoingso).
During my first days riding the public bus in Korea, I felt so worried about
whether or not I was going to make it to my destination. I held my breath every
time the bus stopped, just centimeters before the vehicle in front, and whenever
thedriversuddenlyhitthebrakes.IalsohadtomakesurethatIwasholdingonto
somethingtightlywhenthebuswasmoving;otherwise,likethefirsttimeItook
the city bus in Korea, I fell down. On some occasions, one of my friends even
hadtotakeprescriptiondrugsformotionsicknesseverytimeshetookthepublic
businKorea.Once,Iranmyselfbreathlesstocatchabus,andIarrivedonlyone
secondbehindahighschoolstudent,butthedoorhadalreadyclosed!
However, there was also a time when I saw a bus driver waiting patiently for a
pregnantmothertoboardwithherchildren.Hegreetedherwarmlyandsaid‘It’s
OK,Mom.Takeyourtime.’Anothertime,IwaslostinSeoulandafriendlybus
driver patiently explained to me which route I should take and where to transfer
sothatIcouldsavetimeingettingtoSeoulStation.
In any case, if you have no prior experience taking the public bus in Korea
andyouarenotluckyenoughtogetaseat,makesureyougrabontosomething
immediatelyandholdontightbeforethebustakesoff,becauseyourjourneymay
bevery‘dynamic’.
