Dual Foreign Language Certificate for Graduation
HUFS¡¯ Dual Foreign Language Certificate Program is designed to train students to achieve fluency in
foreign languages by the time they graduate. Students are required to obtain certain scores on the FLEX
(foreign language examination), whether or not they pass the graduation test, to graduate. The Dual
Foreign Language Certificate for Graduation Program requires students to meet the foreign language
certificate standard in two foreign languages. It is considered an innovative program that gives students
the essential skills to become leaders in global society while they study at HUFS.
FLEX (Foreign Language Examination)
FLEX is an examination of foreign language skills developed by HUFS in 1999 after
two years of research. It was designated as a test that could award the national
certificate for seven languages: English, Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Russian,
and Spanish. It is the first and only national certification test for Chinese, Japanese,
French, German, and Spanish in Korea and became a national English certification
examination in 2009. All this proves that FLEX is duly recognized for its practicality and
specialty.
Before FLEX, most examinations of foreign language skills used in Korea were
developed outside of Korea. The FLEX is significant because it is a foreign language
proficiency test that was designed and developed domestically to meet the needs
of Korean learners. Its joint administration by HUFS and the Korean Chamber of
Commerce and Industry adds to the test's credibility and consequently it is used as
an evaluative tool for myriad purposes, including screening for personnel dispatched
overseas by government agencies, local government agencies, government-invested
corporations, and international companies doing business in Korea.
Languages Covered by FLEX

Test takers may choose one language at a time.
(They are not allowed to take tests for two languages at the same time.)
