sustainability in nuclear fusion energy. One of the reasons why the
successofthelunarprobe¡°Danuri¡±isexpectedafterNuri,istoacquire
resourcesthroughlunarexploration.AtleastonemilliontonsofHelium3,
whichissaidtobealmostimpossibletoobtainonearth,isestimatedto
beburiedonthemoon.Thisisbecausethemoonhasnoatmosphereand
absorbs more helium 3 from the solar wind than Earth does. Professor

WhoOwnstheTechnology?
The ITER project, in which seven nations participate, shares data. After the project, each participating country has
intellectual property rights proportionate to research funds and spot investment shares contributed. The data obtained
inthiswaywillbeusedintheconstructionofaDEMOthatwillbeconductedineachcountryafterthecompletionof
ITER.Eachcountrydeterminesitsowndesignorconstructionmethod.ProfessorKoexplains,¡°Wedon¡¯tpayroyalties
toNewton,Einstein,ortheirdescendantswhenwedevelopengineeringtechnologiesusingbasicphysicaltheoriessuch
asuniversalgravitationorrelativity,butit¡¯ssimilartoobtainingapatentonthefinalproduct.¡±
ByparticipatinginITER,KoreahassecuredtherighttoshareITER-relatedtechnologiesdevelopedbyinvestingmore
than$1.5billion,andisexpectedtohaveabout10percentoftheintellectualpropertyrightsinthefuture.ProfessorKo
said¡°AttheDEMOstage,therewillbeakindoftechnologicalcompetitionamongcountriessimilartowhatweseewith
today¡¯snuclearpowerplants.Intheend,weneedtoproduceandshareasmanyresearchanddevelopmentachievements
as possible at this point to lay the foundation for future competition,¡± stressing the importance of domestic research.
TheremaybeconcernsthatsharingindependenttechnologieswiththeITERbusinessmaybedisadvantageousforthe
nation.However,eachparticipatingcountryplaysaspecializedroleinthedevelopmentoffusionpower,leadingtothe
growthoffusionresearchitself.ProfessorLeesaid,¡°TherearecasesofusingKSTARdeviceconstructionexperience
and technology during ITER device construction, but I think this is an investment for power plant construction rather
thantechnologyleakage.Throughsuchactiveinvestment,itisexpectedthatSouthKoreawillsucceedinanindependent
development in the future with economic feasibility and safety secured.¡± It is a device and study material for people
aroundtheworldtocompletefusionenergybycollectingknowledgefromvariouscountriesaroundtheworld.
Nuclear research has great potential than what people have encountered so far. It may be more useful, or safer for
humans.Whatpeopleshouldnotforgetinupcomingresearchissustainability.Thepreviouspowergenerationmethod
hasbeenconsumableandlimited.Ontheotherhand,thecurrentlydevelopingnuclearfusionenergywillbethehighest
level of energy that people have dreamed of. New research and development, including nuclear fusion development,
requires public attention. If investment in the field is activated through public interest, the research environment can
alsobeimproved.AsnotonlyKorea,butalsocountriesaroundtheworldarestrivingfornewknowledgeenergy,Ihope
readersofthisarticlepayalotofattentiontothenextSunofEarth,whichwillbecomethecleanenergyofthefuture,
androotforthesuccessofthisresearch.
