Students should be the ones to voice their rights actively when there are problems. However, their passive
attitudesandindifferencetowardstudentaffairsleadtoalackofcommunicationwiththeschool.TheGSCholds
annualstudentmeetingsintheOpen-AirTheatereverysemester.Thereshouldbemorethancertainpercentage
of students participating to make the agendas discussed in the meeting have legal effect. Indeed, for the
annualstudentmeetingagendastohavepower,atenthofabout8000HUFSans,orabout800students,should
participate in the meeting. However, on the Sept. 26 meeting, only around 500 students came. Even amongst
them,alotofthestudentsleftaftertheyhadbeencounted.
In addition, students showed poor participation in the hearing which took place in the BRICs Culture Center
onOct.19.ThehearingwasofferedbytheGSCforstudentstoexpresstheiropinionsandfindsolutionstothe
problems and damage from ju-jeom. Though the GSC did not give enough time to advertise that there was a
hearing,stilltherewereonlyaround30participants.Evenamongthe30,therewereonly10studentswhodonot
workfortheGSC.Afreshman,majoringinEnglishEducation,whoparticipatedinthehearingsaid,¡°Itseems
thatHUFSansdonotcareaboutanythingthatdoesnotdirectlyaffectthem.Itispitiful.¡±Freedomisfollowed
byresponsibility.Studentsdonotseemtorealizethis.Thoseenjoyingtheju-jeomshouldconsiderthosewhoare
notandshowconcern.AparticipantfromtheDepartmentofEnglishInterpretationandTranslationsaid,¡°There
wasdisgustingsmellneartheOpen-AirTheaterbecausepeoplethrowleftoveralcoholinto
thedrain.¡±
Thedeclarationtoprohibitju-jeomontheschoolcampusandtheGSC¡¯sprotest
against it, are the results of a lack of communication and slow management.
Both the school and the GSC should reflect different perspectives and
opinions, meaning that they should really listen to all the students who are
directlyaffected.Bothbodiesareaimingtobenefiteveryoneintheschool,so
whyfindfaultseachother?Everyoneshouldbeabletocontinuouslyexpress
theirconcernsandfeelingsonaschoolmatter.
Responsibility cannot be separated from freedom. For a long time,
complaints about ju-jeom and the inconvenience they caused increased but
there was no real improvement in the situation. At the Oct. 19 hearing, a
student maintained, ¡°Both the school and the GSC have their faults but I
think they should really think about the students¡¯ opinions.¡± Creating an
improvedju-jeomcultureisuptothestudentsthemselves.Afterall,isitnot
a responsible and considerate approach for students to try to prevent harm
beingcausedtosomeone?
