it be possible to say three answers? Do Koreans have three ages? Yes, it is true. There are
threedifferentwaysofcalculatingone¡¯sageinKorea.First,¡°Koreanage,¡±auniquewayof
countinganewbornasbeing1yearoldfrombirth,isusedineverydaylifeinKorea.Itiscalculatedbyadding
one year to the year of birth on Jan. 1 of each year. Second, in some administrative and legal documents,
another age counting method of simply subtracting one¡¯s year of birth from the current year is employed.
Third, the ¡°international age,¡± an international standard of age calculation which measures how many years
andmonthsthatapersonhaslivedsincehisorherbirthday,isusedinofficialgovernmentuses,documents,
andlegalprocedures.Inaddition,the¡°Born-early-in-the-year¡±system,whichallowschildrentogotoschool
earlyiftheirbirthdayisatthebeginningoftheyear,andthefactthattherealageisdifferentfromthelegal
ageinfamilyregistercertificatehavealsocreatedacomplexanduniqueagecultureofKorea.Meanwhile,as
newlyelectedPresidentYoonSuk-yeolmadeapledgetoabolishtheKoreanagecountingsystemandmake
theuseoftheinternationalagecountingsystemmandatoryforalladministrativematters,Korea¡¯suniqueand
mysteriousageculturemightdisappearintohistory.TheArgusseekstofindoutthecharacteristicsofKorea¡¯s
uniqueagecultureandtopredictwhatkindofsocio-culturalchangewilloccurwhentheKoreanagecounting
systemisreplacedbytheinternationalagecountingsystem.
