threedifferentwaysofcalculatingone’sageinKorea.First,“Koreanage,”auniquewayof
countinganewbornasbeing1yearoldfrombirth,isusedineverydaylifeinKorea.Itiscalculatedbyadding
one year to the year of birth on Jan. 1 of each year. Second, in some administrative and legal documents,
another age counting method of simply subtracting one’s year of birth from the current year is employed.
Third, the “international age,” an international standard of age calculation which measures how many years
andmonthsthatapersonhaslivedsincehisorherbirthday,isusedinofficialgovernmentuses,documents,
andlegalprocedures.Inaddition,the“Born-early-in-the-year”system,whichallowschildrentogotoschool
earlyiftheirbirthdayisatthebeginningoftheyear,andthefactthattherealageisdifferentfromthelegal
ageinfamilyregistercertificatehavealsocreatedacomplexanduniqueagecultureofKorea.Meanwhile,as
newlyelectedPresidentYoonSuk-yeolmadeapledgetoabolishtheKoreanagecountingsystemandmake
theuseoftheinternationalagecountingsystemmandatoryforalladministrativematters,Korea’suniqueand
mysteriousageculturemightdisappearintohistory.TheArgusseekstofindoutthecharacteristicsofKorea’s
uniqueagecultureandtopredictwhatkindofsocio-culturalchangewilloccurwhentheKoreanagecounting
