n“Mi-saeng,”apopulardramathatbeganairinginOctober,theleadingcharactersstarttheircareersasinternsinabig
companyandsoonbecomeemployeesofthesamecompany.Thecharactersappliedfortheinternshiptoachievetheir
ultimategoal,whichistogetemployedbythecompany.
Just like the intense competition between applicants for the internship on “Mi-saeng” illustrates, internships are an
importantqualificationforKoreancollegestudentsinrealityaswell.However,doonlyKoreanstudentsworryaboutputting
aninternshipexperienceontheirresumes?TheArgusaskedfourstudents,“Whatdocollegestudentsinyourcountrythink
ofinternships?”

Chinesecollegestudentsmostlydointernshipstoexperienceacareerfirsthandandunderstand
whatitislike.“Whatwoulditbeliketoworkatthisplace?”iswhatstudentsinterningwonder

internat.IwasalsosurprisedbythefactthatKoreanstudentsgetpaidalotfortheirinternships

abetterresumewhengettingajob.IinternedonetotwoweeksatakindergarteninFrancein

interestedinmedicalcolleges.Inthecaseofcollegestudents,mysisterdidaninternshipfora
yeartomeethercollege’sgraduationrequirements.

InternshipsinJapanarearoundoneortwoweekslonginmostcases,sostudentsdon’ttake
abreakfromschooltodointernships.Collegestudentsintheirsenioryearusuallydoashort

thanthisinternshipexperience,itisn’tconsideredveryimportant.Nevertheless,thereareissues
regardinghowstudentsdonothaveopportunitiestolearnmuchaboutcareersduetosuchshort
internships.

haveaspecificgoalduringtheirinternshipperiod.Studentsoftensaythatinternsarejustthe
peoplewhomakecoffeeandphotocopiesfortheotheremployees.
