eckless development made imprudently for streets, buildings, and factories devastates mountains and forests. Also it lacks self-
sufficiency of the city, reduces quality of life, and brings social imbalance. Thus, to solve those issues, the government set the
counterplanandarrestedthesupplyofahousingcomplex.However,thelocalautonomousentitywhosemaingoalistopursuepublic
revenue’sexpansionaswellastheconstructionlawtakesnothoughtofenvironmentalpreservationacceleratedrecklessdevelopment.
Yonginfromendof1990’swasdevelopedwithoutcarefulconsiderations.Muchsewagewaslowedinandthus,threatenedtheecosystemof
theTanstream,atributarytotheHanRiver.Thequalityofwaterwasgettingworsebecauseoftheinfluxofdustfromafieldofconstruction.
ThemostimportantimbruingreasonoftheTanstream’supperstreamistheinfluxoflifesewageduetotherecklessdevelopmentofYongin,
Suji,andJookjeon.Until1990,Tanstreammaintainedthequalityofwaterfromsecondtothirdgrade,butthequalityofwaterexceededfifth
gradeat2000becauseofrecklessdevelopment.Itwasgettingmoreserioussoitneededurgentcountermeasure.
Sungnamcitytakesmeasurestocopewiththesituationforrecoveryofwreckednaturalenvironment.ItwasasupplyofwatertoTanstream,
12000tonperadayfromthePaldangwaterworks.Recently,startedthesupplyattheDongmakstreamthattheupperside
of Tan stream. Through the water-purity control system, water quality was evaluated fifth grade above until 2006.
Until2013,thecityisplanningtoreceivesecondorthirdgradeforwaterquality.
Atthesametime,Sungnamcitysaysthattheywillpromoteagreentractoflandinordertoenhancethe
qualityofresidentiallife.Forexample,inordertomakefishesbringingupfreelyfromHanRivertotheTan
stream,thewaterwaywillbebuiltunderHanRiver.Inaddition,therewillbemanyplantsinsteadofGray
concreteinadike.
In order to shift a Tan stream into a breathing place of ecosystem, the minimum amount of man-made
facilitiesandimprovementofnaturearerequired.Now,theTanstreamstarteddischargedafterrecognition
of serious damage made by reckless development. However, systematic management is necessary in the
wholesectionoftheTanstream.
Recently,manypeoplejoggingandplayabasketballinthatarea.HanYoen-su,ten-year-oldsays“Ireally
like this place because I am interested in cycling with my grandfather. And there are so many beautiful
things such as water, ducks, flowers...” The Tan stream became the peaceful park for citizens in
Bundang.
TherecklessdevelopmentisstillincreasingrecentlyinKorea.Itisverythreateningourlife
andnature.Wemustthinkonceagainbeforemakingadecisionondevelopment.Followingthe
restorationexampleoftheTanstream,developmentsinexistingdoingindiscreetlyaremust
recovered.Protectnature.Itmeansprotectourselves.
