year has passed since the results of the last Suneung, or the Korea Scholastic Ability Test
wereannounced;ayearsincetheKoreaInstituteforCurriculumandEvaluation(KICE),the
institute that set the exam questions and graded the answer sheets, admitted that they had
incorrectlyscoredaquestionintheWorldGeographysection.Ninethousandstudents’gradeswentup.
However,ayearhasalreadypassed.
KICEhastriedtoexplainhowthosestudentscanbereadmittedtotheuniversitiestheywishtogoto,
but they cannot give them back the year they have lost. The students who applied last year to colleges
thathavelowerscoresrequirementsthantheyactuallyachievedarenotlikelytoapplyfornewschools.
Additionally, many of the examinees most likely suffered through another year of preparation for this
year’sSuneung.
Aftertheirmistake,peoplehopedthatKICEwoulddobetterthisyear.However,thisyear’sSuneung
contained some glaring flaws as well. This year’s Mathematics and English exams were too easy,
diminishing their assessment function. There was more confusion regarding some of the questions
on theEnglish exam aswell.The day that students take that exam isone ofthe most crucial moments
in their life. For young Koreans the exam is a major life goal. Indeed, this matter is not just a trivial
mistakethatwecansimplyignore.
TheMinistryofEducationandKICEshouldactquicklytoreducetheconfusionandanxietyofthe
studentsandparents.UniversitiesandKICEshouldcooperatetoschedulecollegeentranceapplications
on earlier dates. KICE should also inform universities of the rerated grades without delay so they can
acceptadditionalapplicantssoon.Hopefullytheseactsandtheerrorcorrectionforthisyear’sSuneung,
whichisexpectedtobeannouncedonNov.24,willclearupsomeoftheconfusion.
