overamillionuniversitystudentsdressedinblacksuitsstartedrunningtowardafinishlineinwhichonlythe
toponepercentcanreach.
Infact,moreandmoreuniversitygraduatesarejoiningthegetting-job-race,whichseemsalmostsimilartoahorse
race in that the former students do not know where they are heading to. It is no surprise to learn that the severe
competitionissomewhataninescapableresultofoursluggisheconomy.
Atthesametime,however,aninevitablequestioncomestomind,asking,¡°Dotheapplicantsreallyreceivea¡®fair¡¯
evaluation?Doesthisracehaveanyprotectivemeasuresfortherunners?Isthisraceevenworthwinning?¡±
In terms of the way the hiring process evaluates candidates, the current procedure has been criticized for its
obscure and unclear recruiting criteria. There is substantial room for corruption about which the rumors are
spreadingthroughoutthejobmarket.
Mostjobapplicantsbelievethattheirresumephotosarethedecidingfactorinwhethertheyarehiredornot.Some
evensaythatoneofthetopbanksinKoreahadselecteditsfirstroundcandidatesbymerelyscreeningtheresume
photos,inotherwords,thecandidates¡¯appearances.Consideringthetimeandeffortconsumedinwritingathreeto
four-pagecoverletterandresume,applicants¡¯sweatsturnto,iftrue,awasteofaday.
These days, general conglomerates demand that the job applicants write all about how they grew up, underwent
hardshipsandthoughtsalongthoselines.Thefunnythingisthatthereviewersonlyspendthreedaystoevaluateall
theessays.Howmarvelousitisthatittakesonlythreedaystoreadthetensofthousandsofessayssubmitted.Thisis
whymostjobseekersareconcernedabouttheobscureandunclearproceduralpointsofhiringpeople.
Asecondquestionisabouttheprotectivemeasuresthatprovideparticipantswithasenseofsecuritywhilerunning
intherace.Someoftherunnersdesperatelywanteveryonetostandonthesamestartingline,butasweallknow,
thisisnotaccepted.Inreality,theapplicantsaretreateddifferentlybecauseoftheschooltheygraduatedfromand
thatresultsinawideninggapbetweensocietymembers.
Therefore,leadingcompaniesneedtoprovideequalopportunitiestoallapplicantssothatasocialculturecanbe
establishedwhereaperson¡¯sabilityisconsideredmoreimportantthantheireducationalbackground.
For instance, there is a handicap in horse racing in which horses possess different weights. A better horse will
possess a heavier weight to give him a disadvantage when racing against slower horses. The goal of this race lies
inguessingwhichhorsecanovercometheirhandicap.Inoursociety,blindinterviewscouldbeconsideredtobea
handicapintheraceforemployment.
Last September, the job race begun for the university graduates of 2014. At the end of this race, there will be a
slightnumberofwinnersandlotsoflosers.Yet,thequestionwillremainopentothewinners.Isitworthwinning?
Areyoufeelingextraordinaryandreadytobecomeafirstrankedhorse?Wehavetorememberthatthereisasaying,
¡°Donotbecomeatamedracehorse,ratherbecomeawildhorsegallopingonthevastgrassland.¡±
